Mechanisms of Heavy Metal Removal by Cyanidiophyceae

Graphical Abstract_final.jpg

What is Cyanidiophyceae?

Cyanidiophyceae are extremophilic red algae that thrive in acidic hot springs. Their unique ability to tolerate low pH and high metal concentrations makes them effective in removing heavy metals such as arsenic, chromium, and cadmium from contaminated water. Through mechanisms like biosorption, bioaccumulation, and extracellular binding, they offer a natural and sustainable solution for metal pollution remediation.
